This election year, two Washington University students will have a rare chance to get up close and personal with presidential politics.  The Gephardt Institute, in partnership with Student Union and Congress of the South 40, will send one student each to the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, through an educational program operated by the Washington Center.

The program will prepare the students for their experience with a week of forums, speakers, and fieldwork.  Then they will then serve as volunteers at the conventions, interacting with delegates, political party officials, and the media.

Pirring, a junior at California University of Pennsylvania, hopes to attend law school after graduation and become an environmental lawyer. He is grateful he was given the opportunity to attend the convention by his university, he said.

In fact, a college student in a rented Chevy Impala sporting a silvery-goldish exterior.

Jason Taormina, Mr. Piscopo's driver and a fifth-year student majoring in electrical engineering at the Stevens Institute of Technology, could envision the celebrity's reaction. "It's like, 'Yes, I've arrived,'" Taormina joked.

For the moment, Sharlyne Woodbury, who will graduate in the fall, is registered as an Independent. And she is decidedly noncommittal.

"You have to convince me to vote either way," says the political science major. As of earlier this month, she hadn't been persuaded - either by Democrats or Republicans. Yet by summer's end, whether or not Ms. Woodbury has developed a strong party loyalty, she'll certainly have learned enough to be a well-informed voter.
