Hands-on experience is invaluable in education.  No textbook can compare.  That’s the long-standing philosophy of Augsburg College.  Because of its commitment to service learning, Augsburg has been selected to host 250 young people from across the country. They will interact with local and national politicians, journalists and others in the trenches and on the floor of the upcoming Republican National Convention.

The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars unanimously selected Augsburg College as the partner for the Republican National Convention being held in the Twin Cities August 24 – September 5, 2008.  The Washington Center and RNC will join Mayor Rybak and Mayor Coleman at Augsburg on December 12th for a news conference announcing the partnership. During the Convention, Augsburg will host seminars led by notable speakers that in the past have included state senators and journalists such as Sam Donaldson, Ted Koppel, and Andrea Mitchell.  Augsburg will do what it does best – provide experiential learning for 250 young people interested in the world of politics, journalism and public service.

“Augsburg is thrilled to be selected,” said Augsburg President Paul C. Pribbenow. “This is an unbelievable honor and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students and others across the country.”

The Washington Center is a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational organization that provides more academic internships than any other group in the U.S.  It chose Augsburg for this honor because the college has a rich history of combining classroom lessons with real world learning.  Augsburg is nationally recognized for its commitment to experiential learning, active citizenship and its ability to educate and inspire future leaders.  It is known as one of the top ten American colleges for service learning and encourages its students to be active in citizenship now and to develop visions for the global future.

Twenty Augsburg students will be among those selected to participate in workshops, issue forums and convention sessions in addition to fieldwork assignments.  Participants will be required to apply, provide a written recommendation from their school and pay a fee.
