Faculty Directors and Scholars in Residence

For each seminar, a faculty director oversees the academic component by selecting readings, advising on speakers and presenting lectures on relevant convention topics. Drawing from their unique experience and expertise, they also provide analysis and insight into convention politics and the 2008 presidential race.

We are pleased to have the following widely recognized authorities join us for the National Political Convention program. These experts will provide guest lectures and analysis of convention activities and political events. Continue to check back for the announcement of the Faculty Director for The Presidential Inauguration Seminar.

Position Overview

Faculty Leaders

A faculty leader is a college or university instructor who is responsible for supervising and evaluating a small group of seminar participants, usually in the range of 10-15 students.

Specifically, the faculty leader takes attendance, leads small group meetings, accompanies students on site visits, evaluates the students’ written work and provides a recommended grade for the student to the student’s home institution. During the national convention seminars, faculty leaders take on additional responsibilities, such as monitoring students’ volunteer fieldwork and helping students familiarize themselves with the host city.

If a faculty member comes with a pre-formed group of at least ten students, the faculty member is automatically hired to be in charge of their own students. Priority is then given to faculty who recruit less than ten students from their home institution and who may be assigned additional students at the seminar. In the past, many faculty have been able to arrange their participation in the program by offering the seminar as a course with tuition being collected by the institution and either forwarded to The Washington Center or waived.

We encourage faculty to utilize our Student Recruitment Guide found at the bottom of this page as an aid in mobilizing students for the seminars.

Faculty Fellows

College Faculty and secondary- education teachers are eligible to apply for the Faculty Fellows program. Participants pay for the program and housing fees, fully participate in program activities, and are assigned volunteer fieldwork placements at the national convention programs upon request. During the Campaign 2008 Inside Washington and Inauguration seminars in Washington, D.C., faculty members who accompany ten or more students from their home institution receive complimentary housing.
